Jessica's Reflection

Intellectually, I grew by learning historical facts I never knew and never would have paid attention to if I didn’t get the chance to visit this beautiful country! I saw places that I had only ever read about or heard about in songs.  I learned a lot of practical things that I never knew before either. In America, you read about the Pope and you see images on the news, but it was awesome to know that I was there in the proximity range where they would elect the newest Pope! This was my first trip out of the United States, and I have learned a lot. I’m glad that I had the opportunity to take Spanish; and I actually got to use it a little while abroad!  You have to use everything you’ve learned and put it to use. If I had never taken a Psychology class or ever studied history; I would have been overwhelmed by the characters and personalities that I have encountered. In route to Verona we learned from our tour director that there was a tradition behind touching Juliet’s breast for women—that you’ll have good luck in love!  With matters of currency, you have to be up to date and be efficient in thinking and budgeting.

Personally, this trip was exactly what I needed.  I needed some time away from my everyday routine.  While abroad, I strengthened some friendships and built new ones, not only with others I didn’t know, but my fellow classmates.  I am glad that I have seen another country and other sides to people that I see weekly.  This trip also was spiritual for me.  I once had a dream a few years ago about a curvy, and somewhat crazy road…I saw it while on the road to Rome!  I never envisioned myself here, but in a way I guess I did.  Before I left for this trip, during Sunday school and Bible study we mostly talked about Paul in Rome.  To know that I have walked in history is an honor and a blessing from God.  I couldn’t have done any of this without His help.

My experiences in Italy compared to my expectations were better than what I expected.  I didn’t think that we would get a lot of free time ever, but we had the nicest and most respectful tour director—that made the difference.  I was afraid about flying for the first time, and I didn’t know what to expect.  I didn’t think that I would feel so comfortable and at ease here.  For those that haven’t been to Italy, I recommend for you to go.  I can’t tell you how beautiful Italy is, even with all of my mentioning of the word isn’t enough!

For current and future students at USCL or any other college/university, please don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone! The sky is the limit! Travel study programs are the best way to  see the world! You won’t regret it!
