Haley's Architecture Review
The Doge’s Palace represents Gothic architecture, which is similar to the St. Mark’s Clock Tower. Gothic architecture was represented in most of the cathedrals in Italy. It was shown in the cathedrals in Florence and St. Francis’ Basilica in Assisi. The churches in Italy are all very detailed on the outside and surprisingly most of them are a lot less detailed when entering the church. The architecture of the churches on the outside really creates the church, more than the artwork that is inside.
The Doge’s Palace also contains arches, just like the Pon Cestius Bridge. This is something that made up a lot of the architecture in Rome. In fact, every bridge I saw in Rome had arches, which is very different to the bridges in the United States. Also, the Roman Colosseum is filled with arches, along with the arena in Verona.
The Roman walls of Verona represent Renaissance architecture and as you enter Verona, you spot these immediately. There are still a lot of the walls left and they are very tall. Verona also has a very unique style about their buildings. The buildings are very colorful and they are very close together. This is represented in the picture of Piazza Bra. This arrangement of places and colors remind me of Rainbow Row in Charleston, SC. This adds style to the buildings and really catches the tourists’ eyes to make them want to shop or eat near the shops.
The Pantheon has very large columns in the front, which makes it look very large, but in reality The Pantheon is a small temple. I have noticed that a lot of different places in Rome are full of large columns supporting the buildings. The Roman Forum, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and the Capital contain the same large columns as The Pantheon.
